Since the BBC did a TERRIBLE job here, I suggest forwarding your complaint to Ofcom. I just saw the video. It was a terrible piece of fawning nonsense.

gas discharge electrolysis (GDE)

I had trouble finding this; it's usually called glow discharge electrolysis (which is electrolysis at such high voltages that plasma forms at the electrode(s), giving rise to highly reactive species).

haha! i just reviewed available information on the little device. It's essentially a tankless electric water heater with a more efficient element. Which makes it more expensive... Around here (and on ebay) you can get a whole house tankless electric water heater for around $500 - for a decent one. $250 if you don't have much use for hot water. The publication that you linked to (dailymail) states that the units are going to be priced between 1500 and 2000 pounds. that's $3638.78 american. Unless that includes installation and wiring fees, it's a total ripoff. I mean unashamedly and unabashedly just pulling consumer's pants down that want to "be environmentally friendly".

Someone should stop them before they go to market. and refund that poor lady's estate the 20,000 pounds she invested.

I recently had a woo-like friend give me all this information about a perpetual motion machine. I can't recall the creator, although there are a LOT of videos and websites dedicated to his demise. I didn't need to look through them though to tell what he was saying was a load. The video i saw was him hooking up a series of 9v batteries to a very large machine. This is what impressed my friend, you see?

The machine turned, and stayed spinning for a very long time while the guy explaining it said impressive things like "this is a 350 pound flywheel and a 200 pound axle"

It was painfully clear to me that what was going on is the batteries were starting this "perpetual motion machine" - which was comprised of a flywheel, and two DC motors. Large motors, sure. But if they were tuned to eachother perfectly, you could establish a very low loss of energy between the two. So low, that 90VDC could provide the exact amount of power needed that was lost due to friction, heat, and the lack of superconductors. The machine ran for roughly an hour (and so did the video); at which point the guy disconnected the batteries and the machine slowly spun down.

This gentleman also stated that he had tapped into a universal energy supply yadda yadda.

after two hours of carefully explaining the principles of physics, explaining how any fool with two DC motors can do the same thing, and referring him to a few websites with information of the same general idea; he finally agreed. He was actually saddened that people like the guy in the video were allowed to get our hopes up.

heh. Chalk one up for science. Now to go read about the Ecowatt (sounds similar)

Thanks!
